JANUARY MEMBER RECITAL
Hello Flutists!
The AFC would like to invite you to our first ever Member Recital happening Sunday, January 22nd at the Blackerby Violin Shop Recital Hall. We will be hosting a recital with spots available for all our members, students, teachers, and flutists alike! If you are a student preparing for Solo & Ensemble, this is a great way to gain valuable performing experience.If you or a student are interested in playing, please email austinfluteclub@gmail.com to sign-up and let us know the names of the performers, the piece and the composer. Spots are first come first served. Music selections are limited to a 6 minute selection, and spots are only available to current AFC members. Admittance to the recital is free so if you are going to play please invite your friends and family! If you have not registered for membership yet, visit our membership page and fill out the form and pay dues.We hope to see you on January 22nd!Member Recital

20th Anniversary flute choir celebration
To celebrate 20 years of The Austin Flute Choir, Austin flutists have the opportunity to play under accomplished flute choir director Kelly Via. Adults and students (8th grade and up) don't want to miss this hands-on experience playing alto and bass flutes, not generally seen in a student band setting.

ABOUT KELLY VIA:
Kelly Via currently teaches flute at Mercer University, Agnes Scott College, Carere Music and the Atlanta Music Academy. He also directs the Mercer University and Atlanta Music Academy flute choirs.. Kelly plays piccolo with the Atlanta Ballet Orchestra and Macon Symphony Orchestra. For many years he was principal flutist of the former Atlanta Pops Orchestra and has performed with the Atlanta Symphony, Atlanta Opera, Augusta Symphony, Columbus Symphony, Des Moines Symphony and Des Moines Metro Opera Orchestras.afc Flute JAM 2011

John Thorne, flutist, was born in New York City. He attended the Juilliard School’s Pre-College Division and is a graduate of the Curtis Institute of Music, where he was a student of Julius Baker, former Principal Flute of the New York Philharmonic. He has also studied privately with Anne Zentner of the Los Angeles Philharmonic.
Mr. Thorne began his career as a member of the New World Symphony in Miami under the direction of Michael Tilson Thomas. He has held principal flute positions with the Florida West Coast Symphony and the San Antonio Symphony. In 1992, he became the Associate Principal Flutist of the Houston Symphony.
Mr. Thorne has participated in the Blossom, Tanglewood, and Pacific Music Festivals. He is a regular member of the Grand Teton Music Festival in Jackson, Wyoming. In addition, he has served on the faculty of the Moores School of Music at the University of Houston. Mr. Thorne frequently performs recitals in the Houston area with Scott Holshouser, Principal Keyboard with the Houston Symphony.

David Wechsler is the founder and Music Director of The OMNI Ensemble. From the groups inception, it was his vision to have a flexible performing group capable of playing music in many different styles on one concert series. For 26 years that vision has been active and successful. He is the Principal Flute and the Personnel Manager of the Connecticut Grand Opera, and the Second Flutist of the Brooklyn Philharmonic. David has played Principal Flute and various other chairs with many groups including The Key West Symphony, The Discovery Orchestra, The New York Pops, The New Jersey Symphony, The American Symphony, The American Composers Orchestra, The New York City Opera, The New York Grand Opera, The Westchester Philharmonic, and The Long Island Philharmonic. In the commercial field, he was the solo flutist in the Public Theater’s production of King Lear, with music by Stephen Sondheim and Michael Starobin, starring Kevin Kline. He was principal flutist in the most recent Broadway production of Peter Pan with Cathy Rigby, and has played at many other shows, including Beauty and the Beast, Aida, Les Miserables, La Bohéme, and The Lion King. David is active in the recording field as well, playing sessions for film and TV, including scores by Phillip Glass and Ryuichi Sakamoto. As an electronic musician and composer, he performs on the midi wind controller and has written numerous works for live electronics and conventional instruments. These have been performed by dance companies and The OMNI Ensemble. David has been a longtime board member of the New York Flute Club, and served as its president from 2005 until 2008. He holds degrees from Brooklyn College, SUNY at Stony Brook, and is currently a Doctoral candidate at the CUNY Graduate Center. David is on the faculty of the CUNY College of Staten Island, the Brooklyn Conservatory of Music, and the Poly Prep Country Day School. David makes his home in Brooklyn New York with his wife Robin and daughter Maya, in close proximity to Manhattan and the surrounding metropolitan New York area.
